What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth that are designed to look and function just like your natural teeth. They have an artificial tooth root that is secured in your jawbone, and an attractive dental crown that sits on top. The tooth root is made of titanium, a non-toxic metal that can actually be incorporated into your bone. The crown is made of a highly durable advanced ceramic, which gives it the same color and shine as natural tooth enamel.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Because dental implants are designed to be like your natural teeth, they are the tooth replacement option most like your natural teeth. This means:

  • You can eat all your favorite foods
  • Your artificial tooth looks completely natural
  • No special care required: just brush, floss, and make regular dental visits
  • Support your gums and jawbone so they won’t reduce or collapse
  • Can last a lifetime: proven to last 30+ years in some cases, though you may need to replace the crown earlier

These advantages make dental implants the best tooth replacement choice for many people.

Cone Beam Imaging for More Precise Planning and Dental Implant Procedures

One of the problems with dental implant procedures in the past was that they involved a lot of guesswork and sometimes the procedure took longer or maybe had to be abandoned because surgery revealed the condition of your jaw was not as it appeared on your x-rays. Our i-CAT 3D cone beam imaging system allows us to take a detailed 3 dimensional image of your jaws that includes all the important details. This allows us to:

  • Assess the structure and state of your bone
  • Plan the precise placement of your dental implants
  • Eliminate exploratory surgery
  • Perform your procedure more quickly
  • Improve your odds for dental implant survival

These benefits mean that you will have a better dental implant procedure as well as better results.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most people are candidates for dental implants. They can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, from a single one to an entire arch. You can have your dental implant placed right away if you:

  • Have good oral and general health
  • Have adequate bone in the implant site
  • Are not taking medications that may impact bone healing

If you don’t meet all these characteristics, you may have to wait before having a dental implant placed. We may recommend periodontal treatment and/or a bone graft before you get your dental implant.

Depending on the location of the implant and the state of your bite, you may have to wait before getting the crown placed atop your dental implant. Other times, you may be able to have it placed right away.

Smokers have an increased risk of dental implant failure. We will talk to you about the risks before your implant procedure and whether you may have to quit smoking temporarily or permanently to ensure the success of your implants.
